Measuring A Tennis Court

MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • tennis court
  • measuring tape
  • clip board with paper and pencil
  • paper, rulers, and pencils

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Show the class a diagrammed picture of a tennis court.

two Discuss with the class the various terms for the different geometric parts of the court.

three Proceed to the tennis court where the students will measure the various parts of the court. Have the students measure the lines on the court surface and different diagonal lengths as well as the height of the net and post. The age level of the students will determine how much assistance they will need.

four Record the measurements on the clip board.

five Return to the classroom and compare the measurements that the students have with the measurements from a tennis book on tennis court regulation size or the diagrams in this lesson plan.

six Ask the older students to draw a tennis court and label the parts and measurements of the various parts of the court.

seven For those classes that draw the tennis court, display their work on a bulletin board.
