The Angle of Attack on the Tennis Court

MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • tennis court
  • tennis rackets and balls
  • video camera
  • paper and pencils

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Talk with the students about the "angle of attack" on the tennis court, reading through the Teacher Text with them. Discuss the definitions with the students so that they understand what down-the-line and crosscourt mean.

two Proceed to the tennis court where each student will have 10 turns to hit the ball down-the-line and crosscourt. Have the student hit the ball underhand and overhand to see how the way the ball is hit also affects the "angle of attack".

three After each student has had their turn, take time to process the information they acquired during their turn. Discuss their findings.

four Then ask for 5 volunteers to hit the ball and volunteers to video tape them hitting the ball. Return to the classroom and view the tape. Discuss the information that the students observed with the taping.

five Ask the students to write a one page essay on the information that they have observed during their time on the court and with the viewing of the video taping.

six Have the students read their essays to the rest of the class.
