The forces governing aircraft flight are lift, drag, thrust and weight.
The general equation for a force is F=ma, where F is a force, m is the mass
of an object and a is an acceleration. When the force is weight,
the equation above becomes
W=mg, where W is weight (a force), m is the mass of the object and g is gravity
(an acceleration).
In this experiment you are measuring the acceleration.
The acceleration occurs when the velocity (the speed and direction) of an
object changes. When you take the simple instrument into the car you are
riding in you can measure the acceleration and the deceleration of the
automobile.
