| In 1977, the European Space Agency placed the
first Meteosat in orbit. Since then, six generations have
orbited the Earth. The first four have been retired and,
today, Meteosat-5 generates atmospheric images of Europe,
Africa, the Middle East, part of South America, and the
Atlantic Ocean. Meteosat-6 waits for its call to duty. Every
thirty minutes, Meteosat-5 transmits three Earth images to
the European Space Agency's Operations Center, located in
Germany, for interpretation.
