| The Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellites (GOES) circle the
Earth in a geostationary orbit. There are two GOES
satellites: GOES-East and GOES-West. Together, they
continually provide a picture of two-thirds of the Earth's
surface. GOES-East primarily monitors the Eastern United
States, including most of the Atlantic Ocean. GOES-West
focuses on the West Coast, including much of the Pacific
Ocean. Of course, together they provide images of
surrounding areas as well, including all of North and South
America. The GOES satellites constantly measure atmospheric
conditions below, and transmit new images every thirty
minutes, around the clock. |
