**The
Pythagorean brotherhood (try saying that
with a mouthful of toast!) were followers of the Ancient
Greek mathematician Pythagoras. **

**They
tried to describe the world around them and ****thought
that nature could be explained by numbers and mathematics.**

**Someone
came up with the idea of "unspeakable numbers" (no,
they weren't swear words!)**

**These
were numbers that were neither odd nor even and they needed
an infinite series of decimals to describe them. (An example
of an unspeakable number is the constant pi).**

**So
what did people think of next?**

**Well,
the next person to give it his best shot was Aristotle.**
