Pythagorean brotherhood (try saying that
with a mouthful of toast!) were followers of the Ancient
Greek mathematician Pythagoras.
tried to describe the world around them and thought
that nature could be explained by numbers and mathematics.
came up with the idea of "unspeakable numbers" (no,
they weren't swear words!)
were numbers that were neither odd nor even and they needed
an infinite series of decimals to describe them. (An example
of an unspeakable number is the constant pi).
what did people think of next?
the next person to give it his best shot was Aristotle.
