The Harcourt Teacher Leadership Center and Harcourt Learning Labs are designed and outfitted to meet all of an educator's professional development needs. Generous meeting and workshop space invites comfort and ease during programs. A resource center offers print, audio, and video materials for science exploration.

Educators perform experiments in flexible space. Multi-use educational space
The 4,250 sq. ft. Harcourt Learning Lab space is configured for maximum flexibility with movable walls that allow the creation of as many as five separate spaces. The Learning Labs even have built-in laboratory facilities, complete with cabinets, water, and flame.

Educators using the facility's resources. Some other teacher-friendly features include high-speed Internet access, wireless laptops, projectors, easels, and stackable chairs.

The School Visit Orientation Space has a locker room and storage area for school visitors, as well as a lab closet with cabinets and water.

Small groups discuss experiments. Professional programming
Harcourt Teacher Leadership Center and Harcourt Learning Lab professional development programming draws on local strengths to offer the most comprehensive and valuable experiences possible. Specific programs with the School District of Philadelphia, area universities, and other partners offer targeted teacher preparation and development in K-8 standards-based science and technology.

Working with colleagues. By contractual arrangement, the Center can provide single or multi-session programs for in-service days, teacher re-certification, faculty development, parent/teacher team building, and student enrichment. Franklin Institute staff from the Center for Innovation in Science Learning and colleagues in schools and universities throughout the region will facilitate the professional development programs. These programs draw on more than two decades of learning research and development at the Institute, funded by the National Science Foundation and other major public and private sources.

Topics for group sessions may include:

  • Inquiry science in the classroom
  • Using the internet to support science teaching and learning
  • Cultivating community involvement in science learning
  • Learning as exploration in the museum setting

The Harcourt General Charitable Foundation provided generous founding support for the Harcourt Teacher Leadership Center and the Harcourt Learning Labs on behalf of Harcourt, Inc.
