Your Own Flight
Swimming and Diving

Teachers' notes

Illustration

Swimmers can move fast through the water. How do they make themselves move forwards?

If you do the breaststroke, you use your hands to push the water backwards. Pushing the water backwards makes you go forwards. Your feet push the water backwards, too.

  • Show a friend: If you do the crawl, how do you push the water backwards? Why do you go forwards?
If you are a diver, you may wear flippers to help you move through the water.
  • Tell a friend: How do flippers help you go faster through the water?
It would be good to be able to zoom around underwater.
  • Use your imagination: design a way to move rapidly about underwater.
