My name's Lynn, and I'm a coastal
geologist. That means I study coastlines and how they
change over time. I try to help communities deal with
erosion as coastlines move and change.
When I was a kid, I'd always liked science and math, but I never knew what to do with it! It seemed like there were too many facts and not enough ways to use them. But then I had a teacher who showed me how geology can affect people's lives, and the subject came alive for me. I studied math, chemistry, and physics, along with lots of geology classes about rocks, minerals, geologic structures, and earth history. Inspired by my teacher, I learned to be a coastal geologist. I love coastal geology because the changes that take place along coastlines do take a long time, but aren't so long that you can't observe them. Geologists who study rock formations study changes that often happen much more slowly. My study areasthe coastlinescan be changed by one big storm! Why don't you come with me today? I'm going down to the shore to take some core samples, and you can help. Don't worry if you don't know what core samples are. Come along, and I'll show you. |
